All quills are measured by hand and when shipped are as close as we can come to the sizes listed below, within reason.

Diameter sizes are measured at the thickest point on the quill. All quills taper to both ends.

They will be no larger than the diameter listed below and larger than the next smaller size - within reason! All quills are put through a templete to size.

Size 1 = under 1/16 inch
Size 2 = under 3/32 inch
Size 3 = under 1/8 inch
Size 4 = under 5/32 inch
Size 5 = under 3/16 inch
Size 6 = under 1/4 inch
Size 7 = over 1/4 inch

Unusual tail quills - only a few available each year. Are kept by natives for good luck. Approximately 3-6 inches long, with a fine thread (but stiff) like attachment to body and a long, hollow, translucent, quill open at the far end. When the porcupine shakes them together the sound similar to a rattlesnake.

Our quills are in demand by decorators, crafters and artisans worldwide. One or two quills, of sizes 5-7, and about 6-8 inches long also make interesting 'sticks' to hold long hair in a twisted bun or knot. We recommend dulling the ends with an emery board.

Please note that not all quills come in all lengths. If you order, please state if we can substitute to the closest length/thickness (longer or thicker) if we are out of the size ordered.

Where do we get these quills?

Our African Crested Porcupines shed quills naturally, like we do hair, a few at a time. We collect these and save them for orders. Often during breeding season, we find extra quills, the result of them 'doing the wild thing'. They never injure each other, but can easily release them when excited. Unlike the North American porcupine, who has very small heavily barbed quills, similar in diameter to our size 1 and 2, the African Crested Porcupine's quills are barbless and smooth.
