It has been our hobby over
the years, collecting the following terms that refer to various species of living
things. This list is meant for ENGLISH speaking countries.
In addition, we have just added and continue to work on a sixth column that
includes many different terms that relate to specific animals (and or plants)
that are interesting but not necessarily in the first categories.
In some instances the terms are rarely used these days, have different spellings
(probably corruptions of the same word), etc. however, we show them because
you may find them in older literature.
Additionally, animals are referred to by different terms in other countries
(or even local communities). Also, in many species, young are called 'whelps',
chits etc., males and females that have reproduced are called sires and dams
respectively, and a group of related young are called a litter. Occasionally
there is a term for a 'neutered' male or female, and in that instance if we
have the term, we note include it.
We welcome all VERIFIABLE additions.
If you would like to add to this list, and can verify it in PUBLISHED PRINT,
feel free to e-mail
R-Zu-2-U and Treasure Ranch after you have read the paragraph below.
We list all the verifiable terms we have at this time so Please do NOT email
us asking for terms on other animals or to say that you 'heard' someone use
a different term unless it is verifiable in print.
Thanks, Pat Storer
Several have been generously submitted by one of our friends from the world wide
web. We list those contributors at the bottom of the last page.
As a matter of note, several sites have taken our COPYRIGHTED PAGES nearly verbatim
presenting this material as their own. Not only did they steal our copyrighted
information in two cases they copied our html and a couple spelling mistakes!
Duh! - they never had our permission and also did not give us credit. SHAME
ON THEM! One is a university, another an encyclopedia site, another is an animal
information site. Shame, Shame!!!
Can you fill-in or add to those below?
Please be patient while it loads!
